Non-Muslim here. Speaking for myself, I feel so much insecurity whenever I go out because I’m worried about how I look - is my hair perfect? How does it compare with other women? Etc. it’s also ridiculously annoying when it’s constantly getting in the way, but it hurts too much to wear it up all the time and try to look nice at the same time. I have also noticed I get a lot more unwanted attention when I wear my hair down - which makes me feel even more uncomfortable. I wish I could wear Hijab in my country without being misunderstood, because I imagine not only is it more comfortable/functional, but I, personally, would also feel so much safer and more at ease in my own skin and like I didn’t have to compare myself to other women if I had it on. I’m Catholic, so I feel it would also help me to keep my focus on God and demonstrate my submission to Him, rather than seeking the approval of others. For this reason, I have decided to start veiling, even when I’m not at church, or wear soft hats when I’m out. For modesty. But I do wish I could wear Hijab instead without potential backlash. It is so beautiful to me.
